Dr. Berkeley is also among a group of clinical investigators who were selected to be involved in the approval process for the Excimer laser, including LASIK-Laser Vision Correction. Dr. Berkeley continues to be involved in current clinical research for advanced laser procedures including the investigation of an intraocular lens implant designed for the correction of moderate to high hyperopia (farsightedness). A native Texan, Dr. Berkeley received his medical degree from Baylor University College of Medicine. After an internship at Houston’s Hermann Hospital, Dr. Berkeley served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Presbyterian Hospital in New York. He served as Chief of Staff for Twelve Oaks Hospital and is a member of the medical staff of Park Plaza Hospital. Dr. Berkeley is a former president of the American Board of Eye Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.). He is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Texas Medical Association. In addition, he has been invited through the years to speak at numerous national and international medical conferences. Michael B. Caplan, M.D.
Dr. Caplan offers the most advanced options for refractive surgery candidates, including procedures such as conductive keratoplasty and refractive lensectomies. He has served as an investigator in several nationwide studies evaluating implantable contact lenses, new technologies for cataract surgery and multi-focal lens implants. He is a founder and Medical Director of Houston’s Caplan Surgery Center, which provides state-of-the-art outpatient eye surgery in a caring, convenient setting for patients and their families. As former president of the Houston Ophthalmological Society, Dr. Caplan has been responsible for city-wide leadership and continuing education for ophthalmologists in the greater Houston area. He has served on the society’s Executive Committee for eight years. Dr. Caplan is also an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery and the Society for Excellence in Eye Care. Dr. Caplan has traveled internationally on mission trips to remote areas to provide eye care to those in need. A long-time Texan, Dr. Caplan is a Phi Beta Kappa honor graduate of The University of Texas at Austin. After graduating from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Dr. Caplan completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and a prestigious glaucoma fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Brent McQueen, M.D.
Dr. McQueen attended Texas A&M University where he was recognized as the Outstanding Student in the College of Science. After early acceptance and graduation from medical training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dr. McQueen completed an Internal Medicine internship at St. Paul Medical Center in Dallas. This was followed by a residency at the distinguished Louisiana State University (LSU) Eye Center in New Orleans. Dr. McQueen was selected and honorably served as the Chief Resident during his final year of residency. Dr. McQueen currently serves as the Medical Director for the San Jacinto College Certified Ophthalmic Technician training program. He routinely participates in medical missions, serving both as an eye surgeon and general medical practitioner in Mexico, El Salvador, and Africa. He is an active member and Past-President of the Humble Rotary International club. Dr. McQueen’s interests are in Biblical studies and theology as well as being in the outdoors. Specifically, he enjoys corralling livestock, driving his tractor, and spending time with his wife and three daughters at their small farm in Huntsville. Erin A. Doe, M.D.
Dr. Doe has performed thousands of cataract, glaucoma and laser procedures and has spent six years full time teaching Ophthalmology residents. He was named “Teacher of the Year” in 2002 for his instruction of ophthalmology residents at Brooke Army and Wilford Hall Medical Centers. He has published numerous articles in leading Ophthalmology journals. In addition, Dr. Doe received the Robert E. Lee award from West Point for Mathematics and was a semifinalist for the Rhodes Scholarship in 1987. Dr. Doe has received three Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation medals and the Expert Field Medical Badge. Dr. Doe has led or participated in some eight Humanitarian Missions in El Salvador, Honduras and Mexico from 1997 to 2004. Dr. Doe and his wife, Paulene, are the parents of four sons and two daughters.. Regina Sun, M.D.
Following graduation at the top of her class at Katy Taylor High School, Dr. Sun attended college and medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago. She then completed her residency in ophthalmology at the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and completed her Cornea and Refractive surgery fellowship training at the University of Minnesota Medical School. There she gained experience in complex cataract surgery, modern corneal transplantation techniques and wavefront-guided refractive laser surgery. She has also authored textbook chapters and research articles for peer-reviewed journals, such as American Journal of Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology. As a senior resident, she was a recipient of a Goar Award, given each year for excellence in resident research. She is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Houston Ophthalmological Society. Her duties at Berkeley Eye Center, Pearland, will include the comprehensive ophthalmic care of patients with cataract, glaucoma and diabetes. In addition, Dr. Sun has interests in dry eye, minimally invasive corneal transplants and refractive surgery such as LASIK. Dr. Sun was also privileged to have participated in international mission trips including working with a local ophthalmologist in rural China. She is also proficient in Mandarin and Spanish, and her hobbies include biking, gardening and photography. Matthew B. McCauley, M.D.
Dr. McCauley has tremendous experience performing cataract, phakic intraocular lens, the new split-thickness corneal transplants (DSAEK), laser and refractive surgery. He was honored during his time teaching residents with the Best Surgical Teaching Award at the San Antonio Uniformed Services ophthalmology residency. Dr. McCauley served as Internship Class President and was Chief Resident during his final year of residency. He has received other numerous honors and recognitions including the H. Michael Lambert Outstanding Chief Resident Award, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement and Commendation Medals, academic excellence and outstanding merit honors. He has served as Director of Clinical Operations, Chief of Comprehensive Ophthalmology and residency staff at Brooke Army Medical Center. Dr. McCauley has received numerous research awards and has had many articles published in various Ophthalmology journals. He has recently been involved with his fellowship mentor, Dr. Francis Price, developing and publishing on a new ultra-thin corneal transplantation technique for Fuchs’ Endothelial Dystrophy called Descemet’s Membrane Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMAEK). Dr. McCauley is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Medical Association and the Christian Ophthalmology Society.
