
Matthew B. McCauley, M.D., received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Baylor University. After graduating from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Denver, Colorado, he completed a transitional internship from Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, HI. Dr. McCauley then served as Chief of the primary and urgent care center at Camp Carroll in South Korea. His ophthalmology training was completed at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium, Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX, and Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center, Lackland AFB, TX. He received his cornea and refractive surgery fellowship training at Price Vision Group, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dr. McCauley has tremendous experience performing cataract, laser cataract, phakic intraocular lenses (Evo ICL), endothelial corneal transplants (DSAEK and DMEK), LASIK, PRK, and other refractive surgical procedures. He was honored during his time teaching residents with the Best Surgical Teaching Award at the San Antonio Uniformed Services ophthalmology residency. Dr. McCauley served as Internship Class President and was Chief Resident during his final year of residency. He has received numerous honors and recognitions including Best Cataract Surgeons in America, Castle Connolly’s Top Doctor, Texas Super Doctor, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement and Commendation Medals, H. Michael Lambert Outstanding Chief Resident Award, academic excellence and outstanding merit honors.
He has served as Director of Clinical Operations, Chief of Comprehensive Ophthalmology and residency staff at Brooke Army Medical Center. In addition, he trained military and civilian ophthalmology residents as a University of Texas Health Science Center Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. During his years in the military, he was honored to care for injured civilian and active duty members. He also prepared soldiers for deployment by treating them with LASIK and PRK to eliminate their dependence on glasses and contact lenses, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Dr. McCauley has received numerous research awards and has had many articles published in various Ophthalmology journals. Dr. McCauley was the first surgeon in the area to perform DMEK, as well as femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS.)
Dr. McCauley pursued the field of Ophthalmology due to the ever-changing technological advances it offered, as well as the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of patients in such a short amount of time. He feels that this field is truly unique and he thoroughly enjoys working with each individual patient to determine together which surgical option best matches with his or her visual needs and desires.
Dr. McCauley is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Refractive Surgery Alliance, and the American Medical Association. He is also the past-president of the international Christian Ophthalmology Society and has been involved in international missions to help restore sight to the needy since 2005. Dr. McCauley is one of our primary Woodlands Ophthalmologists. He and his wife Bethany are the parents of three children.
