Our Commitment to Advanced Technology
Choosing to have LASIK surgery is a significant decision. We understand that safety and achieving excellent visual outcomes are paramount. That’s why Berkeley Eye Center is dedicated to utilizing only the most advanced, FDA-approved technologies throughout the entire LASIK process, from initial diagnostics to the final laser treatment.
The All-Laser LASIK Experience at Berkeley Eye Center
We offer the “All-Laser LASIK” procedure, meaning no mechanical blades are used at any point during your surgery. This advanced approach utilizes two sophisticated lasers for maximum precision and safety: a femtosecond laser for flap creation and an excimer laser for corneal reshaping.
Step 1: Bladeless Flap Creation (5th Generation iFS® Laser)
The crucial first step in LASIK involves creating a thin flap on the cornea’s surface. While some practices still use a mechanical, bladed device (microkeratome), Berkeley Eye Center utilizes the 5th Generation IntraLase® (iFS®) Laser — now in all our laser eye surgery centers.
This bladeless, all-laser method offers significant advantages:
- Enhanced Precision: The iFS laser provides unparalleled control over flap diameter, depth, centration, and morphology, customized for each eye.
- Improved Safety: Eliminating the blade significantly reduces the risk of complications like corneal abrasions, irregular flaps, or button-hole flaps sometimes associated with microkeratomes.
- Proven Track Record: IntraLase technology is backed by over 20+ years of research and millions of procedures performed worldwide.
By using the advanced iFS laser, we ensure the safest and most precise foundation for your LASIK treatment.
Step 2: Precise Corneal Reshaping (VISX Star S4 IR™ Excimer Laser)
Once the flap is gently lifted, the VISX Star S4 IR™ Excimer Laser System precisely reshapes the underlying corneal tissue to correct your specific refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism). Key features of this advanced Excimer laser include:
- ActiveTrak™ Eye Tracking: This system actively monitors your eye’s position throughout the brief treatment. If your eye moves, the laser follows ensuring accurate placement or pauses treatment if needed, enhancing safety.
- Iris Registration (IR): This sophisticated, non-contact alignment method is crucial for precise custom treatments. Before surgery, unique landmarks on your iris (the colored part of your eye) are photographed. During the procedure, the laser uses these landmarks to perfectly center and align the treatment, compensating for any rotation of the eye between measurement and treatment. Iris Registration ensures the correct treatment is applied to the correct eye and eliminates the possibility of treating the wrong patient.
- Variable Spot Scanning & Beam Shaping: Allows for smooth, precise tissue removal tailored to the custom treatment plan.
Next-Generation Customization: The iDESIGN® Refractive Studio
Conventional LASIK relies primarily on the patient’s glasses prescription. Berkeley Eye Center takes LASIK customization to the next level with the iDESIGN® Refractive Studio. We are proud to have been the first LASIK provider in the greater Houston area to offer this revolutionary system.
How iDESIGN is Different:
This unparalleled level of customization, often referred to as CustomVue™ Wavefront-Guided LASIK, aims to provide sharper, clearer vision and potentially reduce night vision issues like glare and halos compared to conventional LASIK.
Proven Technology, Trusted Results
The advanced technologies used at Berkeley Eye Center aren’t experimental; they are proven systems with extensive track records:
