Why Consider Vision Correction Surgery?
While glasses and contact lenses effectively correct vision for many, they come with daily hassles, ongoing costs, and potential limitations for certain activities. Surgical vision correction offers significant lifestyle benefits:
The procedure is remarkably quick – often taking only about a minute of laser time per eye – and is performed comfortably as an outpatient procedure. Its effectiveness has made LASIK a preferred choice worldwide for reducing or eliminating dependence on corrective eyewear.
Our Advanced Vision Correction Procedures: An Overview
Berkeley Eye Center doesn’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We offer a range of leading-edge procedures, allowing our surgeons to recommend the option best suited to your unique eyes, prescription, and lifestyle.
LASIK Eye Surgery
- What it is: The most popular option. Uses two lasers – one to create a thin corneal flap, and another (excimer) to reshape the cornea underneath, correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
- Known For: Very fast visual recovery, minimal discomfort.
- Often Best For: Patients with sufficient corneal thickness and prescriptions within the treatable range.
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)
- What it is: A flap-free laser procedure. The cornea’s thin outer layer (epithelium) is gently removed, and the excimer laser reshapes the surface underneath.
- Known For: Excellent results, ideal alternative for thinner corneas or certain professions/lifestyles. Initial recovery is longer than LASIK.
- Often Best For: Candidates aren’t able to get LASIK due to corneal thickness or specific activity risks.
EVO ICL™ (Implantable Collamer® Lens)
- What it is: An additive procedure (no corneal tissue removed). A tiny, biocompatible lens is placed inside the eye behind the iris to correct vision.
- Known For: Sharp, high-definition vision, excellent for high nearsightedness/astigmatism, suitable for thin corneas, does not cause dry eye, removable if needed.
- Often Best For: Younger patients (21-45) with moderate-to-high myopia who may not be ideal LASIK candidates.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
- What it is: Similar procedure to cataract surgery, but performed on a clear natural lens. The natural lens is replaced with an advanced artificial lens (IOL).
- Known For: Correcting presbyopia (reading vision loss after 40), potentially high farsightedness/nearsightedness, and preventing future cataracts. Uses advanced IOLs for multi-distance vision.
- Often Best For: Patients typically over 40-45 seeking reduced dependence on reading glasses/bifocals.
