Dr. Elaine Steffensen is a Board Certified Therapeutic Optometrist and Optometric Glaucoma Specialist providing routine and medical eye care at Berkeley Eye Center’s Memorial location. Since joining the practice in 2021, she has performed 17,000 comprehensive eye examinations and treated 25,000 patients. She specializes in the management of complex ocular disorders and custom specialty contact lens fittings.
A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Houston College of Optometry, Dr. Steffensen earned her Doctor of Optometry degree with high honors. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cellular Biology and was a member of the James Scholar Honors Program. Following her doctoral studies, she completed a post-doctoral residency in Primary Care and Ocular Disease at the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry.
Dr. Steffensen’s approach to patient care is focused on education and clear communication. When managing chronic ocular diseases, she focuses not only on treating the condition but also on helping patients understand their disease process so they feel truly engaged in their long-term care. She is proficient in Medical Spanish and is very comfortable providing specialized care to her Spanish-speaking patients.
Her clinical background includes extensive research on the use of multifocal soft contact lenses, which she has presented at the American Academy of Optometry. She has also been published in multiple journals. A dedicated educator, she has lectured on neuro-ophthalmic emergencies and retinal disorders and provided continuing education to local optometrists. Dr. Steffensen is an active member of the Texas Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association and remains committed to community outreach through programs like “See to Succeed.”
In her free time, Dr. Steffensen enjoys running, rooting for the Astros, listening to podcasts, trying new restaurants, and attending group fitness classes. Her favorite travel destinations include California, Hawaii, and her hometown of Chicago.
