The last thing many of us want to think about right now is the end of summer. But preparations need to be made: books and school supplies need to be bought, clothes shopping needs to be done, and yearly eye exams need to be scheduled.
Wait, yearly eye exams? That’s right! Your student’s vision is important to their grades and overall health. A yearly, thorough eye exam by a Houston eye doctor should be performed prior to the start of classes to make sure their eyeglass or contact prescriptions are up to date, and there are no changes in eye health.
The Impact of Vision Problems
Until we reach our mid-20s, our vision can still go through major changes. Children with vision problems can expect to see changes in their vision during this time, sometimes minor and sometimes major. Children with no history of vision problems can develop them, as well.
Undiagnosed vision problems can cause poor performance in school and other areas of life. If your child has vision problems, he or she may:
- Avoid reading or other activities where good vision is needed.
- Have problems learning from not being able to read or see a board clearly.
- Develop headaches, fatigue and discomfort from eyestrain.
All of these factors can negatively impact your student’s life. This is why regular eye exams are so important. They can diagnose vision problems that developed since the last exam and detect changes in vision. From there, glasses and contacts can be used to correct many common vision problems and help to set your student up for success.
