Ophthalmic Scribe/Technician Job Description

SUMMARY

To perform all job functions in a courteous and professional manner. Primarily responsible for medically assisting the doctor and accurately documenting patient examinations in their chart.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experienced Ophthalmic Technician 1- 3 years. Certification preferred, but not required. Team oriented and self motivated with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Willingness to travel between offices. Ability to work under pressure and remain calm in highly stressful daily situations.

WE ARE SEEKING CANDIDATES WHO ARE FAMILIAR WITH MOST OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION INCLUDING:

  • Follow all current and future policies and procedures of the department.
  • Perform basic ocular screening and patient history.
  • Assist in the efficient movement/flow of patients through sequence and evaluation.
  • Medically assist the doctor through the patient examination.
  • Scribe and document for the doctor.
  • Prepare examination rooms to provide all needed medications, forms, consents and educational materials.
  • Coordinate special testing needs with technicians and surgical needs with the surgical counselors.
  • Create a sterile environment using sterile technique.
  • Accurately perform and document the following:
  • Confrontation visual fields
  • Automated keratometry
  • Automated lensometry
  • Manual lensometry
  • Basic pupil evaluation –A/C depth exam and basic slit lamp exam
  • Tonopen tonometry
  • Visual acuity distance and near- NPC
  • BAT & PAM
  • Basic fundus photography (Mac, Disc and Diabetic Series)
  • Basic refraction
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology and equipment.
  • Assist doctor with patient calls, pharmacy calls, etc; return all patient phone calls the same day received.
  • Communicate all doctor instructions to patients and/or other doctors’ offices as directed; fax reports, letters, post op visits, etc., to referring doctors.
  • Ability to travel to all office locations and work with any doctor as assigned.
  • Participate in duties interdepartmentally as deemed necessary, by clinical supervisor, office manager and/or doctor(s).
  • Provide assistance to other clinic personnel as needed.

ORGANIZATIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain practice and patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Exhibit professional demeanor at all times while representing the practice.
  • Maintain a professional level and volume of communication.
  • Participate in staff and educational meetings and training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Most of the on-the-job time is spent walking, sitting, using hands to handle, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Less than one-third of the time is spent stooping or crouching.
  • Sometimes this job may require weight to be lifted; under one-third of the on-the-job lifting is between 10 and 50 pounds.
  • The job requires the following types of special vision: close, distance, peripheral and depth.
  • Typical noise level for the work environment of this job is moderate (i.e. business office with computers and printers, light traffic).
  • Work in an office environment and sustain posture in a standing and or sitting position for prolonged periods of time.

Full-Time Registered Nurse ➤

Location: Greenway Plaza & Katy Surgery Centers (primarily Katy)

Schedule: Full Time

Berkeley Eye Center’ has a full-time opening (32-40 hours/week)for a RN with ophthalmology experience to assist in our outpatient cataract surgery centers in Katy & on occasion the River Oaks area of Central Houston. Monday-Friday Schedule.

Position is responsible for monitoring pre-operative care and post-operative recovery and giving patient instructions for after-surgery care.

Will be trained to assist in surgery suites as well.

Skills Required:

  • Licensed RN

  • Experience in a outpatient surgery center environment.

Oculoplastic Surgical Counselor ➤

Berkeley Eye Center has been a Houston Vision Care leader for 60 years. We have 20 locations and over 430 employees providing services ranging from routine eye exams to performing various surgical procedures in our own outpatient surgery centers,

We recently added an Oculoplastic Specialist to our team of physicians and the increase in patient volume has caused us to create the position of “Oculoplastic Surgical Counselor”

This position will assist our patients with the process of preparing for their surgical procedure including patient education, scheduling financial considerations, medical records, securing authorizations from insurance companies.

Previous experience in both patient education and vision care is needed to be considered a strong candidate. In addition this person needs to be warm and engaging, well spoken, very organized and have a strong sense of identifying priorities.

This position will travel with physician to three Berkeley Eye Center Offices (Greenway Plaza, Katy and The Woodlands) and will also have “admin” days when the doctor is performing surgery.

Cataract Surgical Counselor ➤

Location: Various

Schedule: Full Time

Berkeley Eye Center, a Houston Vision Care leader for 60 years continues to experience growth. We are adding locations and physicians. This growth has us adding support positions on a regular basis.

We are now accepting resumes for the position of Cataract Surgery Counselor. These new positions are being added to various locations throughout the Greater Houston area.

This person will be responsible for introducing and educating our patients on the cataract surgery experience. Responsible for taking our patients through the process of preparing for the surgical day by coordinating scheduling, gathering needed documentation for pre-certification, providing patient education and knowledge of insurance carrier.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Counsel patient regarding proposed surgical procedure at pre-operative visit.

· Explain the procedure to insure the patient has a high comfort level with the procedure and process

· Discuss implant options and self-pay fees including financing options

· Schedule all related post-surgical/treatment appointments

· Obtain pre-certification from insurance carriers for procedure.

· Communicate to patient procedure arrival times and provide pre-operative instructions

· Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

· High School Graduate or equivalent

· Two to three years’ of well-rounded surgical scheduling and patient education experience,in the healthcare field strong preference for vision care background.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NECESSARY TO PERFORM PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

· Professional Appearance

· Knowledge of insurance carrier policies and procedures

· Excellent communication skills

· Top-Notch organizational skills

· Comfortable understanding of electronic health records and computer systems in general
