CustomVue & IntraLase

Since
the late 1990s, traditional LASIK has been the procedure of choice for
surgeons worldwide in their effort to reduce and eliminate the public's
dependence on corrective eyewear. Each year, more than a million people
undergo LASIK to treat their myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. LASIK
combines the accuracy of the VISX Star S4 eye-tracking Excimer laser
with the precision of today's advanced computer technology.
Today,
leading surgeons like our doctors are taking LASIK to the next level
with CustomVue, a customized laser procedure recently approved
by the FDA. During the CustomVue procedure, diagnostic information
gathered during the WaveFront scanning process is fed directly into
our VISX Star S4 eye-tracking laser.
Just like
your fingerprint and DNA, the information fed into the laser is unique
to your eyes only. Each of your eyes will receive its own custom laser
procedure, with no two custom procedures in the world being identical.
Similar to traditional LASIK, our CustomVue custom lasik procedure
is performed under a protective flap and takes only a few minutes to
complete. Patients remain awake and comfortable during the entire procedure.
Most patients report little, if any, discomfort.
Our CustomVue
procedures are performed in the comfort and safety of a specially designed
laser suite at the Berkeley Eye Center. To help reduce possible risks
and complications, factors such as humidity, temperature and overall
air quality are closely monitored and maintained. To schedule an appointment, please call our office at 713-526-3937 or schedule online ».

Berkeley
Eye Center is proud to announce it's use of the Intralase flapmaker. IntraLASIK is the latest technological breakthrough in LASIK.
We can now perform an all laser, LASIK procedure. Laser Vision Correction
is often associated solely with the Excimer laser, but there are actually
two very important steps in correcting your vision:
1. Creating a very thin flap of tissue that is folded back during treatment.
2. Reshaping the exposed surface with the Excimer laser and replacing
the flap.

Until now, the flap has been created with a mechanical, bladed device called a microkeratome. With the bladed style microkeratome there was an increased risk of complications such as corneal abrasions, irregular flaps, as well as button-hole flaps. The IntraLASIK procedure offers added safety for patients by eliminating the blade.
Advantages of IntraLASIK
1. Increased Safety:
a. Because there is no variability in blade quality with the IntraLASIK
procedure, there is little or no risk of flap irregularities. The
all laser approach allows our doctors to design the flap specifically
to your eyes and visual needs.
2. Increased Precision:
a. IntraLASIK offers the ability to create a flap of uniform thickness
at a pre-programmed depth. The traditional style microkeratome
did not account for the curvature of the cornea and created a meniscus
style flap, with the edges somewhat thicker than the center. Any
variation in flap thickness will result in a variation of your visual
outcome. Because we know exactly what depth the flap is being created,
we are able to preserve the most corneal tissue following the procedure,
leaving each patient with a stronger, more stable eye.

3. Less Painful
a. IntraLASIK is a much less invasive procedure that traditional
LASIK. With traditional LASIK, the flap was created with a device
that was fashioned after a carpenter's plane. As it glided across
the cornea it was possible to create an abrasion on the front of
the eye. Patient's experienced quite a bit of pain as this abrasion
healed. With IntraLASIK, the laser passes through the cornea and
creates small bubbles at a preprogrammed depth without applying
friction to the front layer of the eye, a much more comfortable
approach for a patient.
